How Do I Work Full Time and Be A Full Time Student Successfully?
I am 21 years old and I have been working full time (8:30- 5:30, M-F) at a law firm as a paralegal. The only work experience I had before this job was at a Starbucks. I was at the Starbucks for four years, and became a shift manager. I wanted to make more than $9.00 an hour, as I lost my room mate and had a hard time paying rent. I got this new job out of sheer luck, and now feel bound to keep this job because of the hefty paycheck…BUT
It is VERY important to me to finish school, because I do not want to be a paralegal for the rest of my life…. I am going to be a Junior in one month at a University, and I am taking night classes full time. However, I am feel more exhausted every day. I have lost almost all of my friends because I have no time to spend with them. My job wears me out mentally, and I am finding that my grades are slowly dropping! I know that this is good work experience for me, but should I continue to gain "good work experience" and let my grades drop? If I continue at this rate, I will graduate with a 2.5 GPA!! I know I could do better than that if I didn’t work full time.
I’m hoping to find some advice from all you strangers. My friends and family just keep encouraging me to "stick it out"…but I’m about ready to fall apart. Any tips to succeed as a busy busy young person, and maintain a social life (even in the slightest?!)
you need a goal at the end of the road, or at least a reason to do it for
and you will have to forget about social life (I know people like this, it’s impossible, they just fall asleep at parties so they don’t go)
you could go to school part time, but idk if you have a scholarship or something

By all means, stick it out–but not at this level. Next semester, take fewer night classes. I;d try half a full course load for one semester and see if that allows you to improve your grades while pulling down that bigger paycheck.
I’m sure you’re already adept at time management, but don’t forget to schedule time for friends and family once your courseload is reduced.
When my husband was in a similar situation, he always took off Friday and Saturday nights. One we spent alone, the other either alone or with friends, no matter what was going on at work or school. It did him good to leave the pressure cooker, and to be able to count on it. (It did our marriage good, too.)

I would find cheaper housing (move home, roommate, dorm, etc), and cut expenses, so you could work a job that pays less. I think it’s important at this point in your life to do well in school.
But even if you do continue the path you’re on, it can be done. I didn’t have the luxury of quitting my job, because I needed benefits, had a house and car payment. I taught high school full time, went to grad school full time at night, and was in a working band. I graduated top of my class. I drank a lot of coffee and Red Bull, didn’t sleep much, and was tired most of the time.

Wow. You sound so much like me. I’m 25, used to work at a law office, now at a courthouse. It’s good job, but just a job kwim? I also got my job seemingly from luck and I often wonder it was just "meant to be", that I should just be happy with it. I am in the situation where I cannot quit work. I am married, with a mortgage, dreams of children, the whole nine yards. My husband only works part time. He just can’t find anything full time in this weak competitive economy. Financially, I cannot quit work or work part time, school or not. They only thing that could go would be school. But, like you, I don’t want to do this forever.
Think of the reasons you took the full time job in the first place. You lost your roommate, couldn’t pay rent, worried about bills…would having all that stress again be any better than working full time? I know my job is high stress but being a cashier or waitress or something like that would be too, but for much less pay. Is there anyway you can take a lighter load? I take half or part time classes. I know there is no way I could function taking 4 or more classes and working full time. One thing you have going for you is your rank. You’re about to be a junior! That’s means you’re halfway there. You certainly shouldn’t quit school because you are on the downward slope so to speak. It seems that maybe dropping a class per semester and keeping the job would keep your finances, education and sanity in balance.
